I am trained as an anthropologist, received my PhD at the Sociology Department and started working at the Criminology department in 2002. As an endowed professor in Criminology I combine my research and teachings with my function as program director of the ESL research program Monitoring Safety and Security.

In my research I focus in the interplay between international migration, migration control and migration related crimes as human smuggling and human trafficking. I am also a specialist in the field of qualitative research. In order to describe (unintended) consequences of migration and crime control I often apply an ethnographic, bottom up perspective putting emic perspectives at central stage.
